Highgate Ostrich Farm,Oudtshoorn, the first ostrich Show Farm in the world, was opened  in 1937

Highgate Ostrich Farm, the first ostrich Show Farm in the world, was opened to the public in 1937 and since has received thousands of visitors from all over the world. The farm is under the personal supervision of the Hooper family.

We offer conducted tours on highgate  Ostrich Farm

We specialize in offering groups a conducted tour of the farm including lunch and dinner. Meals are served in our historic homestead, which has a magnificent view of the Little Karoo valley and picturesque Swartberg Mountains. Our world famous Highgate Choir entertains visitors whilst they enjoy ostrich egg and meat dishes accompanied by local wines. There is also a barbecue area that can seat approximately 450 people and is surrounded by a wonderful collection of cacti.

View the ostrich, the world’s largest bird on Highgate show farm

During your visit, experience the world’s largest bird, the ostrich, which lays the largest egg, has the most beautiful feathers and eyes that make you want to fall in love and hug them.

Our professionally trained staff shows visitors the various aspects of the ostrich industry. The tour covers the manufacturing of feather products, artificial and natural incubation and the anatomy of these magnificent birds.

At Highgate you can enjoy riding the birds at you won risk, stand on their eggs, touch the birds and cuddle the chicks all in approximately 1 ½ hours.
Highgate is home to one of the largest and most interesting curio shops in South Africa. Original local curios are made by craftsmen on the farm and the manufacturing of certain items can be seen whilst visiting us.

Highgate’s reception area is shaded by a grove of magnificent pepper trees, planted in 1909. In their shade visitors refresh themselves and are serenaded by an excellent farm choir composed of members of staff.
